Banana and Cinnamon Breakfast Porridge

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day because it gets your body going by providing it with the energy it needs to be productive. Breakfast is also known for controlling weight and increasing physical and mental performance. The healthier your breakfast, the more benefits you will be receive. Luckily, this delicious breakfast porridge is hearty, healthy, and satisfying. 

Oatmeal is the most filling breakfast I think you could have. It will hold you over until lunch so you aren’t mindlessly munching during those morning hours. Even though oatmeal is great for you health-wise, there is another powerful ingredient in this recipe:  cinnamon. Cinnamon is an amazing spice because it is capable of aiding in a healthy body. Cinnamon is loaded with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties while helping to fight against cancer and other diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, fungal infections, and so much more. I recommend adding a pinch of cinnamon to your smoothies, parfaits, baked goods, and caramelized fruits.

For this recipe you will need:

1 1/2 cup steel cut oats

3 cups water

1/3 cup raw sugar

1 cinnamon stick or 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp kosher salt

1 caramelized banana, recipe follows

Slivered or chopped almonds

Caramelized banana:

1 banana, sliced in half

1/2 Tbsp butter

1.5 Tbsp light brown sugar

1/8 tsp ground cinnamon


In a sauce pot, combine the steel cut oats, water, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Once the mixture has reached a simmer, reduce the heat and cover. Allow to slowly cook for 25-30 minutes. Then, in a small sauté pan over medium low heat, melt 1/2 Tbsp butter and add the sliced banana halves along with the brown sugar. Cook until the banana is golden and syrupy, about 5-10 minutes. Sprinkle with cinnamon and top the porridge with the banana and sprinkle with the slivered or chopped almonds.
