Love. It can be a complicating word that seems to get thrown around so easily. Love does not have one, specific definition. What love is to me might be something totally different to you, and that’s what makes it so beautiful. I was thinking the other day about love and came to one conclusion.
It’s easy to say we love traveling, cooking, shopping, reading, etc. but that does not define who we are as individuals. I believe that when we act out of love, it is a huge reflection of our character. It’s easy to get uptight and upset over things we cannot control.. and I am a prime example. There are times I feel like a nervous wreck when something is happening out of my control. I am the kind of person who likes a set plan or schedule, and I follow that schedule to the tee. I don’t like to be late, unorganized, or unprepared. Although these character traits are perfect in culinary school, I also have to learn to let go sometimes and relax.
I am not perfect. No one is perfect. I don’t know when or how it happened, but somewhere along the road, I started being really hard on myself. I started having huge expectations for myself and I would feel like a failure if I did not meet these expectations. Honestly, I think I acquired this trait from my dad. He is the most hard working man I have ever known or met in my life. He is never late, unorganized, or unprepared. Even though my dad has such a strong work ethic and is so successful, he doesn’t know when to slow down and relax. I worry about him because I want him to relax and enjoy his free time. If I don’t change my antsy ways now, I will be just like my dad or even worse later on in life.
This is where we come back to Love. If I don’t love myself enough to allow myself time to relax and enjoy my free time, then we have a huge problem. Self love is the most important thing, ever. I think we’ve all heard the phrase “if you don’t love yourself, you will never be able to love anyone else.” It’s so true. So, what do I do to treat myself and love myself? Well, I enjoy being pampered, so I’ll treat myself to a manicure or pedicure. I’ll cook myself a nice, big meal and eat it without thinking about calories or how much I’ll need to work out the next day. I also practice yoga which helps me to calm my nerves and tune into the important things in life. I’ve noticed that during my yoga practice, I do not judge myself or my body. I accept who I am and feel very peaceful.
Do yourself a favor and treat yourself once in a while. Wake up every morning and give yourself a nice compliment. Take pride in your feelings and opinions, but also be humble and listen to what other people have to say. Life is a journey and we learn new things every day. I know that I learn new things about myself all of the time, and it’s exciting. Those times when people make you so mad and you could think of a million rude things to say to them, act out of Love. It is hardest yet most rewarding thing you can do for yourself.
