A Taste of Home

Back at home, in Louisiana, Mardi Gras festivities will be in full-swing this weekend and beginning of next week. If there’s one thing no other state in the country knows how to do, it’s celebrate for Mardi Gras like Louisiana does.  Even though I will be missing out on all things purple, gold and green, my boyfriend did bring me a piece of home with him here to Austin.

King cake is one of the season’s yummiest treats.  It’s like peppermint bark or chocolate fudge during the Christmas holidays.  There are so many different versions and ways to make a delicious king cake, but Meche’s Donuts king cake is by far my favorite.  In a way, it is sentimental because I would always stop by Meche’s on my way to work or school when I was living in Lafayette.  If you are ever in the Lafayette area, you HAVE to go there and pick up some deliciousness.  There’s really no other place like it.

When I saw Taylor, my boyfriend, bring this rather large, unhealthy, and sinful cake into my apartment I had a moment of “OMG, why did you bring this?” and “OMG, I love you.”  My motto with unhealthy but amazing treats is “out of sight out of mind,” but of course, I have to eat a little bit of this king cake.  I will certainly miss celebrating the Mardi Gras season this year with all of my friends because it really is a time of pure fun.  There will be all kinds of parades with bead throwing, music blaring, and foods cooking on the BBQ pit. Last year, my friends and I had the opportunity of riding in our radio station’s truck to throw beads during the dog parade.  It was so fun to see all of the people and their dogs dressed up in costumes and march through the streets of downtown. At least I did get the chance to attend the Gratiae Mardi Gras ball the last two years which is always a blast.

Hopefully next year I will be able to join in on all of the fun, but for now, I will enjoy a slice of king cake and reminisce.

Happy Mardi Gras, y’all!
