I feel like there’s been a big matcha buzz going around.. don’t you agree? Matcha ice cream, matcha cookies, matcha coffees, matcha mochi, etc.! Although matcha is recently popular here in America, it’s been a staple in Japan for centuries.
So, what exactly is matcha? Matcha is the only tea leaf that you ingest. All other tea leaves are steeped and then thrown away but nooo, not our matcha. Ingesting the leaf is what makes matcha so yummy and healthy.
There are 3 main health benefits to drinking matcha:
- Prolonged energy and focus throughout the day. Drink a matcha latte each morning and reap the benefits of feeling focused yet calm all day long.
- Extremely powerful antioxidants. Get this: matcha has more powerful antioxidants than blueberries, pomegranates and dark chocolate. How do the experts know this you might ask? There is a ORAC scale (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) which measures the antioxidants in food. This means, drinking matcha can help fight the free radicals which can multiply into cancerous cells. Along with fighting cancer, it can help with heart disease, high cholesterol, and slow the process of aging.
- Cleanse & detoxify. There is something very powerful in matcha and that is chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is great for the immune system as it helps prevent any damage and disease to our precious bodies.
So, I think we’ve learned enough about how amazing and powerful matcha is. Now, let’s drink some!
For this recipe you will need:
12oz Almond Milk (or any milk of choice)
2 tsp matcha powder
2 tsp vanilla syrup, agave or honey
1 cup ice
*For the vanilla syrup, bring 1 cup water & 1 cup granulated sugar to a boil. Allow to simmer for 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and add 1 Tbsp vanilla extract. Allow to cool before transferring to a squirt bottle or glass jar. Store in the fridge for 2 weeks.*
Combine the almond milk, matcha powder and vanilla syrup in a blender. Blend until it is no longer clumpy from the matcha powder. Pour over a cup of ice and enjoy!
