Life is a journey

Life is a journey

Last night I was watching Giuliana Rancic’s ‘Beyond Candid’ with two, well-known breast cancer survivors, and it was so touching.  Seeing and hearing about other people’s journey with cancer makes me realize how precious life is, and it’s so important to live a healthy life.  Life can always take an unexpected turn so we must always remain grateful and fortunate no matter what is bothering us.

On this particular episode of ‘Beyond Candid with Guiliana:  Hope, Strength and Courage,”  Samantha Harris and Amy Robach shared their stories and journeys with battling and overcoming breast cancer.  Giuliana Rancic, herself, also battled breast cancer when she was diagnosed in October 2011.  These cancer stories are so inspiring and raw, and they truly demonstrate hope, strength and courage.  I can’t even imagine experiencing or someone I am close to ever experiencing such a dark period.  Cancer is the scariest word, ever.

My dad is a General Surgeon, specializing in Oncology and breast cancer; therefore, I have heard some of breast cancer’s inspiring and heartbreaking stories through his experience.  My dad works so extremely hard to cure his patients of whatever complications they may have.  Naturally, there have been instances when he has had a patient who unfortunately, did not overcome cancer.  I have seen my dad upset and torn because all he wants is to heal his patients.  He wakes up in the middle of the night and worries about his patients.  It’s a wonder he is still practicing because he has seen some of the gloomiest moments in the hospital which can really wear on a human being.  Each and every one of his patients are so lucky to be in good hands with him.

Listening to cancer survivor’s stories makes me feel so emotional, grateful, and fortunate for this beautiful life I have been blessed with.  There are so many bad things that occur every day in this crazy world, and yet, I am still healthy and safe.  My family and friends are still healthy and safe.  I try to thank God as much as I can for blessing me with such a loving family. If anything ever happened to one of my family members, I would be crushed. We all have heard the phrase “Life is short.” It cannot be more true.  It doesn’t matter how wonderful something is one day, things can change in an instant.  I try to remind myself of this when I am stressing and worrying about the most insignificant things like when the esthetician screws up my eyebrows… I mean seriously?! Who cares!!

Life is beautiful and there are good people still left in this world.  We need to live fulfilling, open, and loving lives.  Every story is an example of how unexpected life can be, but with a positive and courageous outlook, anything is possible and accomplishable.  Today, I encourage you to take a walk outside, say a prayer, meditate, eat more vegetables, tell someone you love them, do something nice for a stranger, etc.  We are so caught up and busy in the day to day hustle and bustle that we often forget to stop and think and appreciate what’s going on around us. Let’s make more of an effort to do this.

Happy Weekend!
